Wreath Making

Wire fresh greens onto a ring and hang the result on your door.

The prunings from one backyard shrub are enough greenery for a wreath. Wreath making is wiring or tucking plant material onto a ring: evergreen boughs in December, dried grasses in fall, herbs and eucalyptus whenever you can get them. The method never changes. You bind small overlapping bundles to the ring with one continuous wire, so the first wreath you make is usually good enough to hang. It suits people who like working with their hands for an hour or two and having something finished to show for it.

01

What a session looks like

You cover a table, because evergreen sap sticks to everything, and cut your branches down into hand-length pieces. Then you repeat one motion about twenty times: gather a few pieces into a fan, lay it on the frame, wrap wire around the stems three times and pull hard. Each fan hides the stems of the one before it. A 14-inch frame takes most people 60 to 90 minutes the first time and under an hour after that. Cutting and sorting the greens is about a third of the work, so do it all before you pick up the wire.

02

Make your first wreath

What you can make in your first month

Evergreen door wreath

Mixed bundles of fir, cedar and juniper wired around the frame, finished with a bow. This is the one that teaches the whole method.

Kitchen herb wreath

Rosemary, bay and sage wired on fresh, then left to dry in place so you can snip from it while cooking.

Half-dressed vine wreath

Dried or preserved stems tucked into one side of the grapevine base, with the bare vine left showing on the other.

Seasonal swap

Pull the old stems out of the vine base and redress it with whatever is in season. The base lasts for years.

03

The two bases and what each is for

Wire box frame

Four concentric wires welded into a shallow channel. Bundles sit in the channel and cannot roll, which is why fresh, heavy greens go on this one. It is hidden when you finish and can be stripped and reused every year.

Check the frame before you buy

A frame made of a single wire lets greens slide around it. Look for the four-wire box shape and wire stiff enough that the ring does not flex into an oval in your hands.

Grapevine base

A ring of twisted dried vine that is meant to show. Stems tuck between the vines and stay put with little or no wire, so it is the fast route for dried and preserved material.

Size

The finished wreath ends up 4 to 6 inches wider than its frame. A 14-inch frame makes a wreath of about 20 inches, which suits a standard 36-inch front door.

Leave for later

Foam and straw forms need pins or glue and a different way of working. Learn the wire method first.

04

Greens that hold up

Longest lasting

Fir, cedar, juniper, white pine and boxwood keep their needles and leaves for weeks.

Outdoors only

Spruce and hemlock drop needles within days in a heated room.

Dries well in place

Eucalyptus, rosemary, bay, lavender and most ornamental grasses can go on fresh and will dry on the wreath without falling apart.

Mix textures

Two or three kinds of green in every bundle looks fuller than one kind. A flat spray such as cedar at the back and something bushy in front is a reliable recipe.

Accents

Cones, seed heads and berry sprigs go on last, wired or glued on top of the finished greens in groups of three or five.

05

What trips beginners up

Bundles grow as you go

Without noticing, you make each one a little bigger, and the wreath ends up fat on one side. Compare every bundle to the first.

Loose wire

Fresh stems shrink as they dry. Wire that felt snug on day one lets pieces drop out a week later, so pull each wrap until the stems compress.

Running out of greens

A full wreath eats more material than it looks like it should. If the pile is half gone and the frame is a third covered, make the remaining bundles thinner now.

Thick stems

Anything fatter than a pencil will not lie flat and pushes its bundle off the frame. Cut it out and use the side shoots.

Hanging it in the wrong place

A fresh wreath lasts 7 to 10 days in a heated room and several weeks outside in cold weather. Direct afternoon sun browns it quickly.

Sore hands

Pulling wire tight for an hour is hard on the fingers. Take a break halfway rather than easing off the tension.

06

Cutting greens legally and safely

Permission

Cut from your own yard or ask the owner. Taking branches from parks, roadsides and other people's hedges is theft or a fineable offense in most places.

Public forests

Many national and state forests allow a small amount of bough cutting for personal use, some free and some with a permit of around $20. The limits differ by forest, so call the district office before you go.

Poison ivy

Its vines climb trees alongside wild grapevines and cause a rash even when leafless in winter. Grapevine bark is long and flaky. A poison ivy vine looks hairy, covered in small roots gripping the trunk. If you are not sure, leave it.

Toxic plants

Yew, holly berries, mistletoe and ivy are poisonous if eaten. Leave them off any wreath a child or pet can reach, and keep them away from the kitchen herb wreath.

Dry wreaths burn

A dried wreath catches fire easily. Keep it clear of candles, fireplaces and hot bulbs.

Wire ends

Cut wire is sharp enough to scratch a door or a hand. Bend every cut end back into the greens.

07

Where to learn more

University extension services and botanical gardens publish free, photo-led wreath guides every November, and they are more reliable than most video tutorials because they are written by horticulturists who know which greens last. Garden centers, florists and extension offices also run in-person wreath workshops in late fall, typically $40 to $80 with all materials included, which is a good way to try the craft before buying anything.

08

Why the kit looks like this

A frame, a paddle of wire, something sharp

Three things make a wreath: a frame, a paddle of wire and something sharp to cut branches with. Those are the essentials, and they come to under $30, or about half that if you already own pruners. Almost everything is reusable. The frame and the vine base last for years, a paddle of wire covers three or four wreaths, and only the greens are new each time. The recommended lines finish and hang the wreath, and give you a second, quicker kind to make when nothing fresh is in season. The glue gun is for later, once you start adding cones and other pieces that have no stem to wire.

09

Stock the wreath table

Compare the options on each line, then set your tiers and check out from the table list. Clicking a card selects it there, and clicking the selected card again takes that line out. The first line, the greens, is not something you buy online. Everything else starts in the kit except the glue gun, which is for later.

Fresh greens

Essential · Materials

The wreath itself. A 14-inch frame takes about a grocery bag of cut branches.

Not sold on Amazon · cut it or buy it near home

Not sold on Amazon. Prune your own evergreens, or ask a Christmas tree lot for the boughs they trim off the bottoms of trees, which are often free. Grocery stores and florists sell mixed greens in bunches for $5 to $15 from November on.

Wire wreath frame

Essential · Core equipment

The ring your bundles are wired onto. The box shape gives the stems a channel to sit in so they cannot roll.

22 gauge is the usual choice: thin enough to pull tight by hand, strong enough for evergreen boughs. Green disappears into the foliage.
